Marks the start of the $94-million redevelopment project
Cambridge, ON – Saint Luke’s Place officially broke ground today on a new 192-bed long-term care home, joined by Kitchener South—Hespeler MPP Jess Dixon, City of Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett, Regional Chair Karen Redman, residents, community leaders, and project partners.

The approximately $94-million redevelopment will replace Saint Luke’s Place’s existing 114-bed long-term care home and add 78 long-term care beds in Cambridge. The project will create a modern, purpose-built environment designed to support resident comfort, care, and quality of life.
“This is an important moment for Saint Luke’s Place and for the community we have served for 50 years,” said David Bakker, CEO of Saint Luke’s Place. “This new home will allow us to welcome more residents while continuing to provide the compassionate, high-quality care that has always been at the heart of our organization.”
“As we move forward, our community will continue to play an important role in helping us create a place that truly feels like home.”
The new home will include six 32-bed Resident Home Areas, each designed to offer a more comfortable and home-like living environment. The building will also feature updated dining and gathering spaces, nursing and treatment areas, resident rooms and modern amenities.
The redevelopment is being built on land adjacent to the current home. This will allow Saint Luke’s Place to continue caring for existing residents during construction and support a smoother transition into the new building once it is complete.

“A long-term care home is a home, and Saint Luke’s Place has been exactly that for this community for 50 years. We had the great satisfaction of marking that anniversary with a groundbreaking that will let 78 more people call this place their home,” said Jess Dixon, MPP for Kitchener South—Hespeler. “Projects like this take an enormous amount of work and collaboration, and Saint Luke’s Place and the City of Cambridge made themselves ready to build when our government was ready to invest. The need is not slowing down, and today in Hespeler we are building for it.”
“Our government is improving long-term care by building more homes, hiring more staff and making historic investments to support families and protect their loved ones,” said Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Minister of Long-Term Care. “Today marks a significant milestone for Saint Luke’s Place long-term care development. Once construction is complete, 192 residents in the community will have a new home where they can receive the care they need, when they need it.”
“The addition of 78 beds represents a meaningful increase in long-term care capacity for Cambridge and the surrounding community,” said Stan Jones, Chair of the Saint Luke’s Place Redevelopment Committee. “Today’s groundbreaking is the result of years of planning and collaboration, and we are grateful to everyone who has helped bring the project to this stage.”
The redevelopment has been advanced in close collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care, MMMC Architects, and Traugott Building Contractors Inc. Construction is underway, with resident occupancy anticipated in early 2030.
